Poe originally called his salary “liberal” but later referred to it as “nambypamby” when compared to Grahams profits. Poe was paid $800 per year while Graham boasted $25000 in profits. By all accounts Poe and Graham got along very well and had a good working relationship. Graham agreed to help Poe with his planned journal The Penn if Poe worked for him for six montha. “Edgar Allan Poe was hired as an editor and writer for Grahams Magazine in 1841. ![]() Also included in the book are first printings by Poe: A Decent Into The Maelstrom. The first appearance of what is considered the first detective story, The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Also interesting feature is the facsimile signature of Poe on p224 & 273 of the second part for his work on Autography. The Murders in the Rue Morgue appears at p166-179. Overall a very good working copy of a very important book. Some scattered foxing as usual few minor stains and ink notes little affect and none to the Poe works. ![]() Several marginal repairs no text affect and none to the Poe works. Newer endpapers first one with a sticker at top corner no affect. Modern maroon cloth with title labels to spine. ![]()
